„Poland’s top opinion-shaping media”, the Institute of Media Monitoring’s monthly study once again confirms that the most influential media outlets in Poland are Rzeczpospolita, Gazeta Wyborcza and Dziennik Gazeta Prawna. The list of fifteen most often quoted titles includes four dailies, two weeklies of opinion, two radio stations, two television stations, two Internet portals, two business dailies and a tabloid.

Gazeta Wyborcza was the most frequently cited newspaper in August, according to “Top opinion-forming media in Poland”, a monthly study by the Institute of Media Monitoring. The radio segment was topped by RMF FM, while the most opinion-forming television station was TVN24.  PRactice abroad - final 28-05-2009
Winners of the 6th edition of „PRaktykuj za granicą”, a contest organised by the Institute of Media Monitoring, were announced on 27 May. Those are: Anna Deneka, Magdalena Milejska and Karolina Bielawska. Prizes they have won are foreign internships at PR Fleishman-Hillard and LEWIS PR agencies in London, and Feedback Hill&Knowlton in Brussels.

 Euroelections is not all 14-05-2009
In April, the opinion-forming news bulletins were dominated by statements about the elections to the European Parliament. Leading politicians commented on controversial TV commercials authored by spin doctors from Law and Justice (PiS) and Warsaw congress of the European People's Party. Wiesław Gałązka says: it's been long since we have heard so many falsehood and witnessed such a hypocrisy that the main characters of TV news bulletins, dissected in the present report, demonstrated. It's been also a long time since they have lost so much esteem, trust and sympathy.

Among the top fifteen are four television stations and two radio stations.

 Money, love and politics 10-04-2009
The month of March saw the media dominated by comments on the coming Europarliamentary elections. Politicians also referred to tensions between the coalition partners Polish People’s Party (PSL) and Civic Platform (PO) – 128 media pieces, and the problem of nepotism among politicians. Donald Tusk still leads the rankings, although his media activity has significantly declined. Furthermore, there has been surprising reshuffle among the top five. As Wiesław Gałązka, comments unlike it was February the President was not present in the media very often in March. He made 50 public appearances, which is 8 less than in the month before. Lech Kaczyński was outdone by his brother, who appeared in the media 63 times, 11 more than in February. Donald Tusk was economical with words too –104 appearances, a decrease by 27. The difference is that the Prime Minister had more reasons to keep quiet or rather pass certain issues in silence, vide the problem of ethical standards not only in his own party, but PO’s coalition partner, the leader of which was reproached by the press for too personal engagement in business relations involving the state money.

The first stage of PRactice abroad, a public relations contest has come to an end. 190 students interested in social communications and PR have enrolled for the 6th edition of the competition. The largest number of applications were sent by Warsaw University and Wrocław University undergraduates. The two have outdistanced Jagiellonian University and Warsaw School of Economics. Prizes to be won are internships in London and Brussels at Fleishman-Hillard, Hill&Knowlton and LEWIS PR.

 Change of the political status quo 10-03-2009
In February opinion-shaping news media outlets saw dominance of comments on the approaching economic crisis. Politicians opined the government’s cuts of expenditures, drastic savings in the police and depreciation of the zloty. Included in the top fifteen issues that received the most media coverage was one related to neither politics, nor economy. That was the Munich incident involving Mrs and Mr Rokita. According to Wiesław Gałązka, the heroic act of resistance that Jan Rokita showed in defence of his wife’s and his own garments on board of the German aircraft has aroused admiration and outrage even of his political opponent, the leader of Law And Justice (PiS), who has said that “what happened requires a firm intervention of the Polish authorities”.

 Carnival in politics 09-02-2009
In January, news were dominated by comments on the budget cuts, change the image of the PiS, Palikot’s affairs and the resignation of the minister Ćwiąkalski. Members of Polish Parliament - most of all female MPs from Law and Justice - those who used to fall behind, have strengthened their position in media. Wiesław Gałązka says: New image of Law and Justice (PiS) and its leader generated lively interest because, among other things, it was introduced by technically effective spot which starred beautified and reliable female members of the party and spectators-friendly Jarosław Kaczyński. This face and body lifting caused that journalists did not pose an inquisitive question: What did the ladies do when their leader divided and offended the nation? So it's possible that, out of tactfulness, a term "new faces" of PiS caught on and the leader's image changes were in the center of attention.

 Kłopotek – the face of PSL 26-01-2009

Eugeniusz Kłopotek proved to be the most popular politician of the Polish People’s Party (PSL) in the last quarter of 2008. Owing to his public activity Kłopotek was the highest ranked PSL politician, as regards the number of appearances on prime news television programmes. It seems that two disputes over leadership, which the public witnessed in October and November, have been finally settled. It is Michał Kamiński that has become the face of the President’s Chancellery, and Wojciech Olejniczak – one of the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD). In the analysed period the media focus on their rivals, respectively Piotr Kownacki and Grzegorz Napieralski, was systematically shrinking.

 Kamiński defeated Kownacki (download) 07-01-2009
In December, Donald Tusk delivered statements in main editions of TV news bulletins almost 2 times more often than a winner of the second place in the ranking - Lech Kaczyński. In the opinion of Wiesław Gałązka "Jarosław Kaczyński came out the worst in December in the aspect of image". It also appears that November dispute over leadership between the representatives of the President's Office was finally settled. Last month Michał Kamiński spoke to the analyzed TV news bulletins 27 times whilst Piotr Kownacki only 11. Media Monitoring Institute published a new "Ranking of Polish Politicians" completed with an extensive quality commentary by Wiesław Gałązka, expert in the image of politicians.
